DST checklist
Daylight saving time checklist for meetings
DST problems usually show up in recurring meetings: an offset that looks correct today can move someone one hour earlier or later a few weeks from now. Keep the timezone, check the exact date, and regenerate the invite before sending.
Six checks before you send
- 1
Confirm every city uses an IANA timezone, not only a UTC offset.
- 2
For future meetings, compare the city pair on the future date.
- 3
Check whether DST transition weeks differ between the two regions.
- 4
For recurring meetings, confirm the calendar stores a timezone rule, not only one local wall time.
- 5
Preview the calendar link before sending and verify every city is still acceptable.
- 6
Call out any early-morning, night, or weekend attendee in the invite notes.
Meeting corridors most likely to drift
The point is not to memorize one fixed offset. Identify which side shifts, whether transition dates line up, and whether the calendar invite keeps the timezone rule.
New York · London
US and UK DST transitions do not always happen on the same week. Re-check March and October/November meetings.
Berlin · Tokyo
One side shifts and one side does not. Store Europe/Berlin and Asia/Tokyo, not a fixed UTC offset.
Sydney · London
Southern and northern hemisphere DST move in opposite seasons. Audit recurring calls before and after the shift.
Why a fixed UTC offset is not enough
Offsets move
Europe/London is not always UTC+0, and America/New_York is not always UTC-5.
Transition weeks differ
The US, UK, Europe, and Australia can change on different weeks, temporarily altering a familiar pair.
Calendars need rules
A reliable invite needs a timezone rule such as America/New_York, not a pasted list of local times.
